HALACHA OF THE WEEK:Pre-Bar-mitzvah Boys & Synagogue honors According to the Talmud [Megillah 23a] a minor may be given one of the seven aliyot to the Torah on Shabbat, which is accepted as the halacha in Shulchan Aruch [Orach Chayim 282:3].
However, the Magen Avraham [ibid. note 6] and Mishna Berura [ibid. note 13], rule that the minor may not be the one to read from the Torah (a role that enables others to fulfill their obligation). Furthermore, even when permitted, a minor may only receive an aliyah on Shabbat [ibid. note 11] and only up to three aliyot may be given to a minor [ibid. note 14].
Nevertheless, the common practice in Ashkenazic communities is that children under bar mitzvah do not receive any aliyot, except for maftir [ibid. note 12] and even then, only on a "regular" Shabbat when a special maftir is not recited [Aruch Hashulchan Orech Chayim 282:10].
Minors may lead the services for p'sukei d'zimra, "anim zemirot" and even Kabbalat Shabbat. They can also do gelila and open the aron. However, customs do vary among communities, with even these honors sometimes being reserved exclusively for adults.
DVAR TORAH IA large section of this week’s parsha deals with the Yom Tovim: Shabbat, Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
Regarding the latter, our parsha states (23:40), “You shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of an etrog tree, the branches of a date palm, twig of a myrtle tree, and a willow; and you shall rejoice before G-d, your G-d, for seven days.” Based on this verse, Chaza"l learned that taking a lulav and etrog is a mitzvah from the Torah only on the first day of Sukkot, except when one is “before G-d”– i.e., in the Bet Hamikdash – where it is an obligation for all seven days. (Of course, Chaza"l ordained that it should be taken every day of Sukkot, except Shabbat, as a remembrance of the Bet Hamikdash.)
Why should this mitzvah be different on a Torah level?
Rabbi Avraham Shapira ztz”l the former rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav and Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel explained: The message of Sukkot is that a person needs to build a “new house.” Unlike Pesach, which represents sudden dramatic change, the holidays of Tishrei represent painstaking, step-by-step growth. There is Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and then Sukkot, which builds up to the crescendo of Simchat Torah.
Sukkot, when we build "new homes" (i.e., our sukkot), teaches us about the possibility of building, of creating. The Bet Hamikdash, likewise, is our “second home,” where we build ourselves spiritually. To highlight the importance of building “new homes” for ourselves, the Torah gave different laws to our “regular” homes versus the laws of the Bet Hamikdash.
