HALACHA OF THE WEEK: Taking a Nap on Rosh Hashana The Rema [Shulchan Aruch Orech Chaim 583:1] notes (and praises) the custom not to sleep on Rosh Hashana. The source given is a Yerushalmi that he who sleeps on Rosh Hashana, his "mazal" sleeps, implying that his judgment may not go as well as it could. However, the Mishnah Berura [ibid. note 9] notes that the Ari z”l did permit a person to sleep after midday.
Interestingly, many suggest that what the Rema was referring to was not taking a nap - but sleeping late, and therefore, people should wake up before sunrise on Rosh Hashana [see: Kaf Hachaim 583:39]. Furthermore, even those who prohibit sleeping during the day [Mishna Berurah ibid.] note that "not sleeping" is not the goal. Rather, the time should be spent on spiritually worthwhile activities such as learning Torah and saying Tehillim [see also Chayei Adam 139:11]. If a little sleep will facilitate learning, then it is a worthwhile tradeoff (ibid.). The Mishna Berura goes on to say that wasting one’s time is equivalent to sleeping.
Finally, since the first day of Rosh Hashana is the main day of judgment, there is even more room for leniency on the second day of Rosh Hashana [Piskei Teshuvot 583:10].
HATARAT NEDARIM @KINS In person Hatarat Nedarim will take place on Erev Rosh Hashana following each of the Shacharit minyanim. The three dayanim will sit socially distanced in the front of the shul and each attendee will remain at their chairs and recite Hatarat Nedarim in unison.
Remote Hatarat Nedarim will be available over zoom -click here - following the second minyan (approximately 8:00a.m.) In addition, the cRc is offering an online Hatarat Nedarim at 10:00am -click here
DVAR TORAH Why does Rosh HaShanah (the Day of Judgment) precede Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement)? Logically, it would seem to make more sense, and certainly be to our advantage for the day of Mercy, when we are forgiven for our sins to precede the day in which we are judged for those sins.
According to Rav Shimon Schwab the answer is that Teshuva can only begin when a person realizes his or her own self-worth, something that happens over Rosh Hashana, as we proclaim G-d our King, and we His "chosen people."
The realization that there is a King and that I am His servant, and therefore I have self-worth, is a prerequisite for the process of Repentance. If we would start the Ten Days of Repentance merely with confession -- merely with a recitation of all the sins that we committed, we would overwhelm ourselves with our worthlessness, and we would not be in a position to repent.
On Rosh HaShanah, we never say the words "Al Chet" (upon the sins...) or "Ashamnu" (we are guilty). Leave the sins out of it, for the meanwhile. On this day, a person must think about who he is, his vast potential, and his goal in life. From such a perspective, repentance may flow forward.

HIGH HOLIDAY NIGGUNIM As we are aware, this year, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur davening will be significantly shortened and absent many of the tunes we may typically sing. To help remember what “was” and prepare for what “will be,” the DeZimra Institute has created a website with all of the familiar Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur melodies.Click here
