THIS WEEK'S DAVENING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THOSE WITHOUT A MINYAN FRIDAY NIGHT: Kabbalat Shabbat as regular. Remember that following the Maariv amida we say va’yichulu, but then skip to aleinu (i.e. no magen avot). SHABBAT DAY: We do not recite Yikum Purkan. TORAH READING: Parshat Korach and the The Haftarah is Samuel I 11:14–12:22. Chapter 4 of Pirkei Avot is read.
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: LIGHTING CANDLES WHEN MAKING AN "EARLY SHABBAT" When a person is making an "early Shabbat" lighting candles can present a problem. Why? Because typically, an "early Shabbat" minyan starts with mincha right before the time of "plag mincha" (1-1/4 halachic hours before sunset - this week 6:54 p.m.), and Shabbat candles should not be lit before that time [Orech Chaim 263:4].
Of course, if a wife stays home and does not go to shul, she can light the candles on her own, after the time of "plag mincha passes". But what if a person lives alone and wants to go to shul for the "early minyan (this week 6:40 p.m - which is 14 minutes before "plag mincha")?
According to the Biur Halacha [Orech Chaim 263 s.v. "kodem halayla"] it is permissable to light candles as early as two hours before sunset (this week 6:29 p.m.). Therefore, a person can light candles even before a going to "early minyan". (However, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach disagrees with the interpretation of the Biur Halacha, see Shmirat Shabbat Kihilchata vol. 2 Chapter 43 note 66).
In addition, Rabbi Aryeh Tzvi Frommer in his responsa Eretz Tzvi [responsa #113] suggests that the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch that one cannot light candles before "plag mincha" is only the ideal. However "b'deavad" a person can light candles even earlier. (See Shl"a Mesechet Shabbat s.v. "u'l'inyan zman hahadlaka".) Furthermore, the Aruch HaShulchan explicitly rules that one may accept Shabbat prior to plag. His argument is that there is no Halachic limitation to tosefet Shabbat, therefore, it is permissible even before plag [Aruch HaShulchan, Orech C. 263:10].
DVAR TORAH Korach's rebellion was one of the most challenging episodes in the history of the young Jewish people. As Ramban taught, Korach assembled a group of disgruntled people and chose to attack Moshe at a moment of perceived weakness - right after the debacle of the spies and G-d's decree that the nation would spend 40 years wandering in the desert.
Yet, as Malbim and others note, despite the seemingly single complaint of Korach and his band of rebels, in truth, each sub-group had a different reason to rebel. The bechorim were troubled that they lost their right to serve as priests; the tribe of Reuven was upset that they lost their place as the "firstborn" of the tribes, and of course, Korach rebelled that Aharon had been anointed as the high priest.
It is for this reason, explained Malbim, that the rabbis of Pirkei Avot (5:20) described this "machloket" (dispute) as insincere - not "for the sake of heaven." Because the goal of Korach and his co-conspirators was not to achieve a single unified goal, instead, their dispute consisted of competing and contradictory aims (after all - if the bechorim would win, what would have happened to Korach's dream of the high priesthood?). That is why the mishna in Pirkei Avot that described Korach's revolt is asymmetrical - failing to mention Moshe, Korach's antagonist - instead writing "the dispute of Korach and his group." Because the dispute of Korach was not just with Moshe, but among themselves - between Korach and Datan and Aviram, and Korach and the 250 first-born.
