HALACHA OF THE WEEK: Changing the On/Off Time on a "Shabbos Clock" While the use of a "Shabbos Clock" (i.e. an electric timer) is not universally accepted [see for example the objections of Iggrot Moshe Orech Chaim 4:60], many people do use such devices to control electric lights and other appliances on Shabbat.
According to Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, not only is it permitted to use a "Shabbos Clock", but under certain circumstances, it is permitted to change the on/off times [Shmirat Shabbat K'hilchta 13:25].
Specifically, if the on/off times of the timer can be changed by merely mechanically sliding the indicator, then:
1. It is permitted to move the "off" time to a later time. For example, if the light was set to turn off at 4:00 pm, you can set it to turn off at 5:00 pm.
2. It is permitted to move the "on" time to a later time. For example, if the light was set to turn on at 4:00 pm, you can set it to turn on at 5:00 pm.
(Under no circumstances are you allowed to turn off or on a light at an earlier time!).
If when moving the indicator - you have to loosen a screw (or totally remove the indicator), then you cannot change times, unless if you first put a second such indicator in place (at the later time). Therefore, if the time it was supposed to turn off was 4:00 pm., first put a second indicator in place at 5:00 pm and only then remove the first indicator. This same procedure would also have to be followed for those timers which have push-button indicator - do not release a time before the second is in place.
DVAR TORAH The midrash [Shemot Rabbah 33:8] teaches that when the manna first appeared, precious jewels were scattered alongside. The great people ["gedolim sh'bahem"], continues the midrash, collected both the jewels and the manna; while the masses, only collected the manna.
But why didn't everyone collect the precious jewels?
Rabbi Michel Twerski of Milwaukee suggested that the answer lays in the fact that in the desert, all of a person's needs were met. Food fell from heaven, water flowed from a miraculous well, clothing did not wear out, and shelter was provided through the miracle of the clouds of glory.
When a person does not have any worries or needs; when there is nothing to buy or sell, what possible purpose can there be for jewels? And so, to the simple Jew, the jewels which appeared with the manna, were nothing more than stones mixed in with their food. But the great people understood, that even though jewels were meaningless at the moment, there would be a time when jewels could be used to build a Mishkan and adorn the vestments of the kohanim.
Concluded Rabbi Twerski that this midrash teaches us what the difference is between the masses and the leadership - it's all about perspective. A person who sees only the reality of the moment, cannot be a leader. But one who can imagine what is ahead and what needs may emerge, such a person can lead others to greatness.
