Minyanim will resume at Congregation K.I.N.S. beginning the week of June 14th.
THIS WEEK'S DAVENING INSTRUCTIONS FRIDAY, June 12 is the 20th of Sivan. Some observe this as a Fast Day. FRIDAY NIGHT: Kabbalat Shabbat as regular. Remember that following the Maariv amida we say va’yichulu, but then skip to aleinu (i.e. no magen avot). SHABBAT DAY: We do not recite Yikum Purkan. Av haRachamim is recited. TORAH READING: Parshat Beha’alotcha and the Haftarah is Zechariah 2:14-4:7. Chapter 2 of Pirkei Avot is read
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A LATE MINCHA While mincha can be recited as early as a half hour after midday, the latest time for mincha is subject to debate. (For example, in many Chassidic communities, mincha is regularly scheduled after sunset!)
According to most authorities, mincha must be recited BEFORE sunset [Mishna Berura 233:14; Aruch HaShulchan, ibid. 12; Igrot Moshe Orech Chayim 1, responsa 24]. In fact, according to some, it is better to recite mincha on time, without a minyan, than to recite it after sunset with a minyan [Mishna Berura, ibid.]. (Others disagree and prefer a post-sunset mincha with a minyan [Minchat Elazar 1:23 and Choveret MiBeit Levi, Nisan 5756 p. 57, responsum of Rabbi S. Wosner].)
However, because of the famous debate between Rabbeinu Tam and the Geonim - regarding the definition of "night" and of "dusk" ("bein hashmashot") - even those who generally forbid a post-sunset mincha, do allow one to recite mincha after sunset, where there was no other choice (i.e. if one forgot to recite it on time, or was unable to do so). In such a case, mincha may be recited as late as 20 minutes AFTER sunset [Biur Halacha 233:1].
It is this classic debate which may be the source for those who regularly recite mincha an hour or more AFTER sunset. As Rabbi Menashe Klein explains, since the Shulchan Aruch writes that mincha can be recited after sunset [Orech Chayim 233:1], -- even though most authorities disagree -- we can rely on its ruling and recite mincha up to 72 minutes after sunset [Mishne Halachot vol. 7, responsum 32; see also, Shulchan Aruch HaRav, Siddur, "Seder Hachnasat Shabbat"].
Finally, if one enters a shul and finds that they are already reciting maariv, and he hasn't recited mincha yet, he should recite the Shemona Esrei of mincha while the rest of the minyan is reciting the Shmona Esrei of maariv. In this way, he fulfills the mitzva of "tefilla betzibbur" (prayer with a minyan) even though they are reciting two different services [Mishna Berura 236:11].
DVAR TORAHAt the end of the parasha we read of the punishment Miriam received for having spoken against her brother Moshe. As part of that punishment, Miriam was exiled from the encampment of the Jewish people for seven days, during which time the Torah teaches:"...the nation did not travel until Miriam was brought back in." [Bamidbar 12:15].
According to the Talmud [Sotah 9b] the reason all the Jewish people had to wait for Miriam (despite her punishment), was as reward for the time she waited at the banks of the Nile River to watch over her baby brother Moshe.
But, was the reward only received now? Why did it take eighty years to be granted?
According to the late, Rabbi Baruch Weinberger, z”l in his work Shemen HaTov the reason is because only at this point in their history could the Jews fully appreciate the importance of Miriam’s act of chesed. Only now, did G-d say to all - that her brother, who she saved, was greater than all other prophets [Bamidbar 12:7-8].
Sometimes, we do a mitzvah and we don't realize the implications of that deed. Sometimes it takes a week, a month, a year or even more. Perhaps even take eighty years until we see its significance. But we must remember that everything we do has an impact on those around us, or on ourselves and understanding that impact is one of the most important things we can do.
