Remember that following the Maariv amida we say va’yichulu, but then skip to aleinu (i.e. no magen avot). SHABBAT DAY: We do not recite Yikum Purkan. Birkat HaChodesh is recited for the month of Av (Roshj Chodesh is on Wedensday). Av HaRachamim is not recited. TORAH READING: Parshat Mattot-Masei and the Haftarah is Jeremiah 2:4-28 and 3:4 (the second of the three haftorot known as “Shalosh d’Puranuta”). Chapter 1 of Pirkei Avot is read. TUESDAY, EREV ROSH CHODESH: At mincha we do not say tachanun. At night, the “Nine Days” begin. WEDNESDAY, ROSH CHODESH AV: We follow the special davening of Rosh Chodesh (Hallel and Musaf).
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A Brief Review of the Laws of the Nine Days The nine days, begin Tuesday night, July 21st (Rosh Chodesh Av), and are the beginning of the most intense season of national mourning, as the Talmud states [Ta'anit 26]: "When the month of Av begins, we reduce our joy."
From Rosh Chodesh (Tuesday night 7/21) and until after Tisha B'Av: • We avoid purchasing any items that bring great joy. • We suspend home improvements and the planting of trees and flowers. • We avoid litigation with non-Jews, since this period of time is not considered a time of "fortune" for the Jewish people. • We abstain from eating meat (including poultry) and drinking wine - foods which are symbolic of the Temple service and are expressions of celebration and joy. On Shabbat, meat and wine are permitted. This applies also to any other seudat mitzvah, for example, at a Brit Milah or at the completion of a tractate of Talmud. Some have the custom to let a child drink the wine from Havdalah this Saturday night. • We refrain from wearing newly laundered garments, or laundering any clothes, even if done by a non-Jew or in preparation for Tisha B'Av. (If the "freshness" has been taken out of a garment prior to the Nine Days, it may be worn.) Fresh clothes may be worn for Shabbat and young children's clothing, which is frequently soiled, may be laundered during the Nine Days. • We do not bathe for pleasure. However, it is permitted to bathe in order to remove dirt or perspiration, and bathing in warm water is permitted on Friday in honor of Shabbat.
DVAR TORAH The three haftarot which lead up to Tisha B'Av are known as the T'lata d'Puranuta [lit. Three of Calamity] all are prophecies of Yirmiyahu that warn of the impending destruction of the Beit HaMikdash if the Jewish people won't repent. However, in addition to the thematic connection of these haftarot to this time of the year, many have found a connection to the first word of each haftarah - "divrei," "shimu," and "chazon." "Divrei" is an allusion to dibur, speech, "shimu" to shemiah, hearing, and "chazon" to reiyah, seeing. The idea is that what we say, what we hear, and what we see, should lead us to correct what needs correcting and avoid what must be avoided.
However, Rabbi Mosheh Twersky, hy" d, the grandson of Rav Soloveitchik who was murdered in a terror attack in Har Nof, also found a connection between this time of the year and the parshiyot we read. Last week's parsha of Pinchas includes a lengthy description of the korbanot that we, in exile, can no longer offer. This week's parsha of Mattot-Masai contains descriptions of the boundaries of Biblical Israel, much of which we no longer control. And finally, Devarim mentions the sin of the spies, which was the first tragedy to befall our people on Tisha B'Av.
