HALACHA OF THE WEEK:Shnayim Mikra V'echad Targum: PART 2 Last week, we reviewed the Gemara's position [Berachot 8a] that, "one should always finish the Parshiot with the community [by studying] Shnayim Mikra V'echad Targum (the Parsha twice and Targum Onkelos once)."
However, the Gemara does not specifically state that one must complete Shnayim Mikra V'echad Targum (ShMO”T) by a specific time. Tosafot [ibid. s.v. Yashlim], however, states that it is preferable to complete ShMO”T before eating on Shabbat. In fact, the Magen Avraham [Orech Chaim 285:2] cites the Shelah Hakadosh that it is preferable to complete ShMO”T on Friday after midday. However, Tosafot notes, that it is acceptable to complete ShMO”T study even after the meal. However, they believe that ShMO”T must be completed before Shabbat ends, which is the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch.
Nevertheless, the Shulchan Aruch cites two lenient opinions. One allows one to finish ShMO”T until the Wednesday after Shabbat in which we read the particular Parsha. This view is based on the Gemara [Pesachim 106a] that permits one to recite Havdala until Wednesday if he forgot to do so on Motzaei Shabbat. A second, even more lenient view allows one until Simchat Torah to finish ShMO”T. The Aruch Hashulchan [Orech Chaim 285:10] writes that this is a viable opinion. The Mishna Berura [285:12] cautions that all authorities concur that it is preferable to complete ShMO”T before Shabbat ends.
On the other hand, Tosafot writes that one may begin ShMO”T study after the Mincha on Shabbat afternoon when we begin to read from that Parsha. This opinion is codified by the Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 285:3 and see Mishna Berura 285:7).
DVAR TORAH There is a dispute in the Midrash as to the origin of the name “Noach.” Rabbi Eliezer said that the name is derived from "Re'ach Nicho'ach" - the pleasant aroma emanating from the sacrifices that Noach offered as he exited the Ark, and reminiscent of the fiery furnaces from which Avraham, Chananya, Mishael, and Azarya all emerged unscathed. While Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina associated the name "Noach" with "Vatanach HaTeva" - the "resting" of the Ark upon Mount Ararat.
Rabbi Mordechai Rogow explained this Midrash in the following manner. He wrote that while the ark protected its passengers, it also posed a threat to them – that perhaps their salvation might lead to false sense of self-worth and importance. Noach, however, was unaffected by this and throughout the flood showed selfless devotion to the animals in the Ark. G-d noted this and accepted Noach offering as a "Re'ach Nicho'ach" – similar to all those who were saved from destruction and used their salvation as a motivation to draw closer to G-d.
But even more, the Midrash concludes, Noach strength of character was apparent even AFTER the flood; even after "Hanachat HaTeva" - as the ark settled and life returned to normal.
