HALACHA OF THE WEEK:ASARAH B’TEVET ON FRIDAY For the first time in seven years, Asarah B’Tevet, the fast which commemorates the beginning of Nebuchadnezzar’s two-and-a-half-year siege of Jerusalem, occurs on a Friday. The reason that can occur on erev Shabbat, is because just like Yom Kippur, it is referred to in Tanach with the words “b’etzem hayom hazeh” [in the midst of this day] and therefore it is never postponed.
The fast begins 72 minutes before sunrise (6:02 am) and ends at tzait hakochavim (30 minutes after sundown - 4:55 p.m). At shacharit we say selichot and avinu malkeinu (as with every fast day). However, because it is erev Shabbat, beyond the special Torah reading and aneinu we do not say tachanun or avinu malkeinu.
Shabbat preparations are as usual. Bathing and haircuts are permitted, even for those who avoid these activities on other fast days [Mishna Berura 551:7]. But those who have the custom to refrain from listening to music on fast days, should also refrain from music on this Asarah B’Tevet.
Asarah B’tevet will occur on a Friday four more times in the next 20 years, in 5784, 5785, 5795 and 5798.
DVAR TORAH At the beginning of this week's parsha, Yehuda approaches the Viceroy of Egypt, "vayigash eilav Yehudah", unaware that this mighty right-hand man to Pharaoh was actually his long-lost brother, Yosef. According to Chazal, this was Yehuda's moment of greatness, as he rose to challenge the Egyptian ruler, ready to risk it all in order to save his younger brother, Binyamin.
The Vilna Gaon noted that this heroic moment is reflected in the trope on the first six words of the parsha (וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלָ֜יו יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּאמֶר֮ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִי֒).
The first three notes are "kadma, v'azla, rivi'ee" - which, when translated from the Aramaic mean "the fourth one got and and went" and refers to Yehuda who was the fourth son of Yaakov - who arose to challenge the Viceroy.
The next three notes are "zarka munach segol" - which translate to mean "he threw away his place with the treasured (nation)." This refers to Yehuda's promise to his father "If I don't bring him [Binyamin] to you, and set him before you, I will bear the blame to you forever."
