HALACHA OF THE WEEK: Parshat Parah This Shabbat, the Shabbat after Purim we will the special maftir of “Parshat Parah,” the section in the Torah which discusses the Red Heifer [Bamidbar 19:1-22]. The reason for this special reading is to remember us of the purification process that was a part of the preparations to offer the Korban Pesach.
Most halachic authorities rule that the requirement to hear this special reading is rabbinic. However, there are those who disagree and rule that this reading Parshat Parah is a Biblical requirement, just like Parshat Zachor [Be'er HaGolah OC 685:7]. However, the Vilna Gaon rejected this and insisted that the opinion that the Parshat Parah is a biblical obligation is merely a printer’s error [Biur HaGra, OC 685:22], while Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk suggested that in the times of the Beit HaMikdash it was a Biblical requirement, but today only a rabbinic one [Meshech Chochma, Bamidbar 19:20].
As a result, although women should make an effort to hear Parshat Parah in shul, there is no absolute obligation for them to do so [Nitei Gavriel Purim 22:4]. Indeed, some even argue that women should be completely exempt from having to hear the Parshat Parah. The reason is because the suggested source for this mitzvah is found in the story of the Golden Calf (where we find the words "lo tishkach"), and since women were not involved in the sin of the Golden Calf, they do not have the obligation to hear the reading [Arugat HaBosem OC 205]! DVAR TORAH On the eighth day of the dedication of the Mishkan, the Jewish people were told to bring several sacrifices. Included among them was a goat for a sin offering.
The midrash suggests that this sacrifice serves as an atonement for the sin of selling Yosef. What is the connection? Because to cover up their crime of selling their sibling into slavery, Yosef's brothers slaughtered a goat and dipped his coat into the goat's blood to make it look like Yosef was killed by a wild animal.
Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin, z"l, in his commentary Oznaim LaTorah asks an obvious question: Why is this symbolism appropriate NOW at the dedication of the Mishkan?
Even more, if there was to be an atonement for the sin of selling Yosef, why didn't they do it at the time of the Exodus, perhaps offering a "Paschal Goat" instead of a lamb!? In fact, maybe this would be even better since the sale of Yosef led to the Jews going down to Egypt.
Answered Rav Sorotzkin that the cause of the sin of Yosef's sale was unfounded hatred (sinat chinam). Since the function of the Mishkan was to act as a unifying force within the Jewish people - that's why emphasis is placed on the fact that it was "in the midst of the camp"- this was the perfect time to atone for the sin of Yosef. Let the unity of the people repair the sin of disunity!
