HALACHA OF THE WEEK:Medicine on Pesach While there are agencies which publish extensive lists of Kosher for Pesach medicines, the following statement was sent to all members of the cRc: "...cRc policy, as directed by our Rosh Beth Din HaRav Gedalia D. Schwartz, Shlit"a, is that medicinal non-chewable Tablets, Pills and Capsules do not require Passover certification.
The source for this ruling is in the Shulchan Aruch [Orech Chaim 445:5] and is based upon the concept that medications (and creams) are not fit for human consumption. Therefore, even though they are swallowed, since the person never considers this anything but medicine, even the concept of "achshavey" [lit. he makes it considered (as if it was food)] does not apply and it is permitted to use [Ktav Sofer Orech Chaim 111; Chazon Ish 116:8; Iggrot Moshe Orech Chaim 2:92 and 3:62; Yichave Daat 2:60].
However, this only applies to pills and capsules. Syrups and lozenges may still be considered like food and therefore, must be Kosher for Pesach [Shmirat Shabbat K'hilchata 40 note 163]. Of course, if a person is dangerously ill even medicine that is chametz may be consumed [Orech Chaim 466:1; Mishna Berura ibid., note 2]. For more information, click here
DVAR TORAH "When the entire assembly saw that Aharon had died, they wept for Aharon thirty days, the entire House of Israel. And the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelled in the south, heard that Israel had come by the route of the spies, and he warred against Israel..." (Bamidbar 20:29-21:1)
Why did the Torah place the story of the death of Aharon next to the war with Canaan? What is the connection between the death of Aharon and what the King heard?
According to the Rabbi Mordechai Rogow, z"l, the answer is that with the death of Aharon, the peace that he had always been careful to preserve, began to break down. Disagreements arose between Jews, and the Jewish people became vulnerable.
This is what the king heard!
In fact, Rabbi Rogow explained, this idea also explains an earlier encounter with the Canaanites. Four hundred years before there had been a quarrel between the shepherds of Avram and the shepherds of Lot, at which juncture the Torah adds "And the Canaanites were then in the land."
What is the significance of the "Canaanites were then in the land?"
This, is the same idea we find in our parasha: As long as there was peace between the shepherds of Avram and Lot, their unity was a guarantee of protection from external enemies. But as soon as quarrels broke out, then Canaan appeared, ready to take advantage of their weakness.
Only when we are unified are we strong. Or in the words of a famous politician "United we stand, divided we fall."
