HALACHA OF THE WEEK:Purim Seudah on Erev Shabbat As a general rule, from mid-Friday afternoon and on, a person should not eat a large meal in order to preserve a hearty appetite for Shabbat evening [Orech Chaim 249:2]. As a result, when Purim falls on Friday, the Purim Seudah should be eaten early in the day, preferably before noon [Aruch Hashulchan Orech Chaim 249:7].
However, once a person has begun the Purim meal before the “prohibited time” (2:48pm) the meal may continue. Nevertheless, a person should try to “leave room” for the Friday night meal [Aruch Hashulchan, ibid.].
There is an alternative approach on how one can schedule the Friday Purim Seudah referred to as “poress mappa u’mikadesh” – literally, spread the tablecloth and make kiddush. According to this approach, the Purim Seudah begins late in the day on Friday. In the minutes leading up to sunset, a person would cover the bread (and according to some any mezonot) on the table and then recites Friday night kiddush. After kiddush the meal can resume as the Shabbat evening meal, making sure that one eats a kezayit of bread (about an ounce). However, according to the majority of authorities this approach is not ideal [Maharil 56], and typically used only when there is a scarcity of food to make two festive meals on a single day.
